*The contracting nouns in the GNT are all irregular.

χείμαρρος, -ου, ὁ (???: χειμάρρους fr. χειμάρροος) is an -ο stem that occurs in the GNT only in the genitive: χειμάρρου (Jn 18:1). But outside the GNT, it as χειμάρροος, χειμάρρους, and χείμαρρος.

Contracting and Irregular Second Declension Nouns

The following nouns happen to be both contracting and irregular. They are not, however, irregular because they are contracting—though they are the only contracting nouns in the GNT. (In contrast, the few contracting adjectives in the GNT are all regular.)

  • Ἰησοῦς (stem: Ἰησο-)—and by extension Βαριησοῦς—is only irregular in the dative.
  • Ἀπολλῶς (stem: Ἀπολλω-) and Κώς (stem: Κω-) are only irregular in the accusative.
  • ὀστέον/ὀστοῦν is irregular because it occurs both contracting and non-contracting.
